History

Before its colonisation, Marrickville had been home to a tribe of Gadigal or Cadigal people. Their descendants still reside in the region today. According to the 2016 Census, 415 Aboriginal people lived in Marrickville.

Marrickville was formally named in November 1861 by William Dean. Before this, the area was called ‘Marrick’ after the 60-acre estate of Thomas Chalder, who purchased land in the region during the colonial settlement. It was a single estate until 1855 when it was subdivided into streets and houses.

Ferncourt Public School was originally built as a house, called Prosna, by artist Gracius Joseph Broinowski.

The Aboriginal clans that originally lived in the region called the region ‘Bulanaming’.

The first school in the region, Marrickville Public School, was created by Thomas Chalder. ‘Heathcote’ was the name of Chalder’s large mansion located on Prince’s Highway in St Peters. It was eventually replaced by the Southern Cross Hotel.

Sydenham Road passing through Marrickville was originally called Swamp Rd after the Gumbramorra Swamp, a massive, muddy swamp in the region.

The first school in Marrickville opened in August 1864. The Marrickville Post Office opened in 1865.

Marrickville first became a municipality in November 1861 and was later merged with the municipalities of St Peters and Petersham to form Marrickville Municipal Council in 1948.

The Sydenham Stormwater Basin was completed in 1941.

The site where Henson Park Hotel is now located was once known as the Marrick Hotel.

During the mid–2000s, Marrickville went through considerable gentrification and has now turned into one of the “hipster suburbs” of Sydney. It is often called "the new Newtown" by locals for its mixed population consisting of young professionals, artists and musicians.
